This issue continues our tradition of supporting outstanding young scholars and benefiting from their research and analysis. Caroline Leprince writes on the Canadian-led Kandahar Provincial Reconstruction Team (PRT) 2005-2011 established to help the International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) expand its authority beyond Kabul to all of Afghanistan. Ariel Garneau examines the complex process of volunteer military enlistment and the U.S. military recruiting strategy of targeting ethnic minorities through the use of TV commercials. Eric Morse looks at the French operation in Mali and observes that there is no news coming out of the war zone. Dr. Jack Granatstein writes to the Editor in response to George Pearce’s comments made in our previous issue. David Satter writes that with the U.S. pending withdrawal from Afghanistan, no nation has more to fear from the consequences than Russia which faces the possibility of both instability in Central Asia and the radicalization of its own Muslim population. Dr. Alice Aiken enlightens us on a new organization, the Canadian Institute for Military and Veteran Health Research and the exceptional research that it is conducting for our veterans. The Editor shares his observations made on his recent trip throughout China. See the report RCMI goes to Ottawa on the Institute’s presence at the 2013 Conference of Defence Associations and Institutes (CDAI).
