A key part of the Institute’s activities is a vigorous publications programme to encourage the dissemination of various types of papers, on topics of both historical and contemporary strategic and military affairs, with some items for sale (to defray the cost of production) and others distributed electronically without charge. The results of the Institute’s Defence Studies Research and Programmes are published and disseminated in three series of scholarly papers, plus one periodical. The publications are available from our website in electronic (PDF) document format. In order to view them, you will first need the free version of Adobe Acrobat Reader if it is not already installed on your system. The Institute’s publications include: |
| • RCMI Commentary |
| • SITREP |
SITREP, which is the traditional military acronym for the term "Situation Report," is a sixteen page bi-monthly publication which is delivered in hard, and/or electronic copy, to Institute members, as well as to certain Institute stakeholders in the academic and policy relevant communities. SITREP is designed to provide a more immediate coverage of topical issues and events than do The Otter Papers and The Heritage Papers. |
| • The General Sir William Otter Papers |
The Otter Papers reflect Defence Studies devoted to the examination and analysis of factors and issues relating to the contemporary Canadian foreign and security environment, including development and peace and conflict studies where they relate to Canadian foreign and defence policy. These papers are specially selected from those presented at events organized by the Institute as best representing Otter's objective for the Institute of "the promotion and fostering of military art, science and literature in Canada," and range in format from 3,000 word single topic studies, to book length manuscripts. |
| • The Heritage Papers |
The Heritage Papers include specifically selected artifactual materials which relate to the Institute's purposes, including items held in the library and archives of the Institute, which have either not been published before (other than in manuscript or mimeograph form), or which are out of print and not freely available to interested academic and stakeholder communities. These papers range in format from 3,000 word single topic studies, to book length manuscripts. |
| • The Selected Papers |
As part of its emphasis on Canadian Military Heritage Studies, the Institute has initiated a series of publications, The Selected Papers, a revised version of the RCMI Heritage Publication series Selected Papers: From the Transactions of the Canadian Military Institute. This series will feature reprints of some of the intellectual property unique to our institution. |
